Pirate Mike Fires Up The Boatmobile!

Monday, December 12th, 2016

For this one, as usual, the hardest part was the fourth panel. I’m still not entirely satisfied with it. I also debated putting planks on the side of the boatmobile again, but I wanted to see what it would look like more car-ish. I did enjoy having the son do the whole Robin Batmobile routine from the old tv show. I was worried the “clunk!” was a little bit predictable, but sometimes I just have to do stuff because I enjoy seeing Mike frustrated so much. So whatever gets me there, that’s what I’m going to use! I don’t know what I’ll do with The Boatmobile next, but I suspect we’ll see it again!

Pirate Mike Buys An Apple Watch!

Tuesday, April 26th, 2016

For this one, I teamed with Travis Blair of Zarfling who wanted to do a strip about the new Apple watch coming out. I had a lot of fun, particularly with the first panel. For some reason, I love the challenge of drawing something behind glass. I also think I had some fun with the perspective lines here. It also gave me a chance to show Mike being more pirate-y. I mean, hey, he tried! I particularly enjoyed the idea of Mike thinking he could just mortgage the house. The little color diamonds in the back there also make me happy.

Pirate Mike Plays Hockey!

Wednesday, April 13th, 2016

Ice is a little like drawing glass. Drawing a winter scene is always one of the challenges I enjoy and I think I got it right here. Leaving the sky white to me emphasizes how freaking cold it is, plus I love the little puffs of breath from Mike. The only thing I kind of blew here was I should have put a knit hat on Mike’s head instead of his normal hat. I like Astronaut Al as Mike’s foil again, but I doubt I will continue doing that in the future, instead re-focusing on the premise of the strip that Mike is stuck in the ‘burbs.

Pirate Mike Promotes Safety!

Wednesday, April 13th, 2016

Another early one with the red-headed brat I love so much. Any time I can use the words “scram” and “you old goat” in a strip, I’m going to take it. Like Phinn, the red-headed brat appears to speak in ’40s gangster talk. Which I really like. I can still see me using her more in the future. I just don’t know how yet. You can also definitely tell that this one is an early Pitt art pen one that I would like to redraw in the future. I think it would also benefit from some better work on the settings.

Pirate Mike Sees Kubrick!

Tuesday, April 12th, 2016

The reason for this one is probably so I could draw Mike’s expression in the first panel which I love. 2001 is one of my favorite movies and, like other folks who actually like it, I have my own pet theories about it. At the same time, I can’t imagine that it’s a movie Mike would particularly like. I can see Bonnie liking it though. I also have a strip or two in my head where Bonnie tries to get Mike to like jazz. Mike doesn’t quite dig it. Maybe someday I’ll get that one churned out and posted. I think it could be a two or three strip sequence perhaps.

Pirate Mike Goes Banking!

Tuesday, April 12th, 2016

This one almost came out the way I wanted it to. I want to do more strips with Mike dealing with a bank somehow and I got close here, but I’m not sure what I’m looking for exactly. First, I think I’ve posted this strip elsewhere with the character called Banker Bill, which I think is better. I’m pretty happy with the name of the bank being Sharkbank with a little dollar sign and  I love Mike’s look in the first panel. I also like the slogan: Your Money Is Our Money! I think Wells Fargo probably took this attitude to heart when they decided to illegally open fake accounts for their customers across the country.

Pirate Mike’s Son Focuses!

Monday, March 28th, 2016

I love, love, love how the characters look here. Billy needs hair on the side of his head, but I love the expressions. I also like Billy’s schpiel in the second panel. But, again, what to do in that third panel? Can I pull the rabbit out of the hat there? Meh. Maybe? The finish hasn’t really even been hinted at and I don’t think it’s a good payoff. I think if I could have done something other than baseball, something more father and son oriented, maybe it would have worked. I still like the strip, but it’s this kind of writing issues I’m hoping to address more effectively in the future.

Pirate Mike Imparts Wisdom!

Friday, March 11th, 2016

This is another popular one. And it’s also one that pretty much popped into my head fully formed. Not only did I get to draw Mike pontificating, I also got to use some of my favorite ’80s lyrics from one of my favorite ’80s bands. If you weren’t a kid in the ’80s watching music videos, then you missed those moments of awesomeness when 38 Special took to the screen. Their videos are visual phenomena that must not be missed. Get thee to a YouTube! The idea of of 38 Special as offering a guide to life is something that really cracks me up. Maybe next time it will be Hall & Oates. Pure awesomeness.

Pirate Mike In Space!

Friday, March 11th, 2016

Initially, this one had Mike and Al just floating in outer space with Al expressing regret at the banality of his thoughts while in outer space while Mike just floated off into the distance. Which perhaps I’ll still do someday. But then I went in the direction of Al saying something I think might also be the case. Of course, then the tv shows up and sends the strip into political waters which really work here for me. Drawing the characters in outer space with white outlines to make them stand out poses a challenge and I think that’s something I’ll want to work on again in the future.
