Pirate Mike Hangs Around!

One of my favorites is this nod to Dark Side of the Horse by Samson. Samson regularly makes brilliant use of the space afforded to the strip by visually representing the breaking of those panels. It’s a wonderful illusion and reminds you that humor and comics are, in an important respect, are akin to magic tricks: the reader should ask, how did the cartoonist do that? how did they make me involuntarily laugh or otherwise react to this strip? Just like in a magic trick you involuntarily react with wonder, really. I’m pleased by how often folks tell me they only notice the bent panel border on a second pass through the strip, like it’s an easter egg.
